Fireplaces in Paris are good, especially since the buggers don’t know how to insulate their buildings. Especially if you’re walking down a freezing cold rue de somethingorother at 10 p.m. Did I mention that fireplaces are good? The auberge du clou has a fireplace, and that, by extension, makes it good (make sure to reserve upstairs, that’s where the fireplace is.)

The restaurant is named (as far as I gathered) after the nails once used by artists to pay for dinner with paintings or something similarly charming and French and traditional and whatever, and the food is great. We started with foie gras de canard (also good for cold weather) and the terrine du moment (also good for cold weather.) Can’t go wrong with a nice brick of heart attack. The mains, filet de boeuf with truffle potatoes and carré d’agneau were done perfectly and red, and worked well with a bottle of Corbières Mémoire du XXème siècle (had that once before at one of our favorite places in the Alsace, the Couronne d’Or in Leymen.

Try the brioche de pain perdu for dessert, and that’s all there is to it — all good food, nice atmosphere and a fireplace. Two thumbs up, check it out.
